The Effortless Academic
Courses

If you want to improve your research, remove the friction out of writing papers, and just feel more “on top of it”. I have six courses recorded as series of small video lectures and organised into two tracks. The two foundational courses are information management and AI literature reviews. I recommend going through them first to get the most out of the follow-up courses. Any course purchase makes you a member of the EA Community where you can access all course materials, get support from me directly, and interact with over 1000 fellow academics and students.

Learning Track

Information Management Course Track

The goal of this track is to teach you a system for organising academic ideas, insights, and PDFs in one unified platform. The result resembles Wikipedia but for your research. Just like Wikipedia, you can search everything globaly and use links to connect related ideas, but unlike Wikipedia, the main purpose is not storage, but learning and writing academic papers. Watch this video introduction to learn more.

Information Management

Foundational Course

Using the Obsidian app, build a personal "Research Wikipedia", which stores all PDFs, notes, ideas and drafts in one connected and searchable system. This knowledge repository becomes more useful over time, helps generate novel research ideas, and organise/remember all your reading.

Project Management

Follow-up Course

Master a complete system for managing complex research projects and notes, questions, and results into clear insights. Keep big projects organised and see ideas connect across your research. (Consists of Academic Knowledge Management 2.0 and Finding Research Gaps Webinars)

Academic AI Agents

Follow-up Course

This course will teach you how to set up a system of AI agents running alongside your academic notes and papers. The agents know your research, can find connections to notes you touched years ago, dig through your Zotero library, find literature online, and do any organisational chore you can imagine.

Learning Track

Literature Review Course Track

The goal of this track is to make your literature reviews and grant proposals faster and deeper through the use of recently developed academic tools and AI. The foundational literature review course teaches you the essential tools for searching, analysing, synthesising, and prioritising academic literature, while the Writing and Publishing courses offer the logical next step to get your ideas into writing and publication. The courses are focused on tools and workflows, not generic writing and searching advice.

AI Literature Review

Foundational Course

A complete step-by-step system for running a literature review using the newest AI tools for discovering, synthesising, and understanding academic literature. The emphasis is on tools which are relevant for senior academics and students.

Publishing With AI

Follow-up Course

Ditch Microsoft Word and embrace collaborative writing in Google Docs to get academic writing done faster, with fewer errors, less back-and-forth and a solid versioning system. Introduces the use of Gemini AI for your writing process.

Writing with AI

Follow-up Course

Writing with AI is a controversial topic with ethical implications. In this course you will learn the narrative-first method: Retain full control of WHAT is written but save time by outsourcing the wording. Designed to work with your digital notes collection.

Want to work with me in a small group instead?

Every 3 to 6 months, I run intense 3-week cohort classes in small groups called the Effortless Learning Mastermind to learn digital note-taking, organisation and introduce the newest ideas not included in the pre-recorded courses.

These classes deeply transform your workflows but are not for everyone, as they require a big time commitment. If you are serious about joining the next cohort, you can join the waitlist and I will inform you when it starts.

1-on-1 coachings are available upon request. Book here.

Which course is right for me?

The foundational course is Information Management. It is the soil which you need to grow your ideas. It teaches you a system of digitally storing your best ideas. The next step is the lit review course, which helps you discover and identify impactful literature. As your knowledge grows, you will need more sophisticated techniques for organising your projects, and finally, when it comes time to write up your findings, the writing & publishing courses will be useful.

This course is by far the most popular and essential of all courses because here you build a system to hold everything you learn, read, and think. Without a system, you simply forget what you learn and will waste time re-learning it. It’s not complex, but it requires a mindset shift that is explained and demonstrated here.

The Lit Review Course is for those who want to learn about the newest tools for academic research and how to combine them most efficiently. It dives into searching, analysing, synthesising, and prioritising academic reading and connects to the Information Management course.

This course is a more advanced sequel for the Information Management course and focuses on how to organise research projects, document findings, ideas and questions and synthesise large bodies of academic ideas into a coherent narrative. Mind mapping is an integral part of the method

These two courses are intended to speed up the writing process by leveraging AI for writing and outlining your papers. The approach focuses on you controlling the narrative (the what) and letting AI help you with the wording (the how), resulting in a system that is ethical and genuinly improves your writing.

Testimonials

Thousands of researchers have taken Effortless Academic Courses & Webinars. Here’s what some have shared:

My first course with Ilya was the Literature Review course, which I took because I was struggling a lot with my PhD research. After that, I continued with Note Taking and Writing with AI. These three courses were essential in changing my mindset about how research can be done. Suddenly, the work started to make sense, and I knew what I needed to do to actually move things forward and get things done. Every one of Ilya’s courses is a gem, packed with practical material that helps you process information more effectively and work much more efficiently. And the best part? The support he provides and the community he has created. It keeps you updated, motivated, and helps you deal with all kinds of setbacks along the way. Money well spent.

I’d been using Obsidian to manage my PhD work for nearly three years before taking this course. Through YouTube tutorials, conversations with colleagues, and plenty of trial and error, I’d built a note-taking system I liked and felt comfortable with. Even with that experience, Ilya’s Information Management course changed how I think about organising knowledge. I haven’t found anyone who explains the key concepts as clearly as he does. He goes beyond showing you how to use Obsidian: he gives you a framework for thinking with your notes and connecting ideas across your research. What I especially appreciate is how the system reduces the effort of organising and maintaining your notes, leaving more room to focus on the research questions that matter most to you. I’m recommending this course to all my colleagues. I wish I’d had it at the start of my PhD, and I think it belongs in every academic’s starter toolkit.

Ilya’s AI Agents course completely transformed my Obsidian workflow. Through sharp, step-by-step video instruction, he demystifies complex integrations, showing you exactly how to deploy agents across both your local vault and the broader web. The payoff is immediate: buried connections surface effortlessly, turning Obsidian into a genuinely proactive second brain. Crucially, the system amplifies output without diluting ownership — you remain completely in command of your voice, perspective, and ideas.

I have worked in academia for 29 years and it has been a while since I worked on a manuscript from start to finish. I joined the Academic Writing with AI because I wanted to learn what new methods of working on a paper are available to academics. Ilya's courses are chock filled with information. He shows you all his tips and shortcuts for writing AI prompts and explains how they work. It was really helpful to see the examples he provided. I would highly recommend taking this course if you want to reduce the time it takes to prepare a manuscript.

Writing is a large part of the work academics do. Adding AI to the mix, especially AIs tuned to consumer levels, without a clear picture of what it can do and how it can be a reliable assistant for you, is a recipe for bad outcomes. In the webinar, Ilya shows how to think about what the writing process entails. From there, he goes on to demonstrate how to create AI assistants that you prompt to act as your own personal research assistant, colleague, editor, even reviewer number two! Your writing process is your own. This webinar gives you prompts and tools to make it more efficient, perhaps more fun, and you more productive.

Ilya truly hits the nail on the head when it comes to the effective and responsible use of AI in academia. I attended the workshop hoping to learn how to better organize my literature and make the academic writing process more efficient using AI, and it exceeded my expectations! The seminar was highly informative and provided far more insights than I anticipated. I left with a range of practical ideas and tools that I can immediately apply. Ilya is an experienced and professional presenter who shares valuable examples from his own academic journey. He takes the time to answer questions thoroughly while maintaining an efficient and engaging pace. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in using AI thoughtfully in academic work!

COURSEs FAQ

Have a question?

Everything you need to know about Effortless Academic courses.

The information management course replaces the older note-taking course from 2024. Obsidian has introduced many new features, and the note-taking system has also matured over the last few years. The new recording follows a new structure, has new chapters, is produced in much higher audio and video quality and is organised in smaller chunks to facilitate a better learning experience. Folks who purchased the note-taking course shortly before the release of this one (2 months), will get a separate email with a free upgrade.

Yes. The project management course consists of two courses previously sold separately: Academic Knowledge Management 2.0 and Finding the Research Gap. I combined them into one product, as they both cover similar topics and complement each other. If you have already purchased any of the previous courses, don't purchase this one separately, as they contain the same content.

This course is for anyone who needs to organise large bodies of information in a way that tracks every idea to its source and allows you to produce academic writing from your notes. While all examples are taken from academic work, the same system will benefit knowledge workers or authors writing non-fiction books.

The information management track uses only Obsidian, which is a free tool. The Lit review course introduces twelve different tools, all of which offer a free tier to try, with the premium version costing money. For writing with AI, I primarily used the standard ChatGPT subscription, which can be replaced with Gemini, Claude, or any other large language model.

I generally don't offer refunds, as this is a digital product, which you can save for later use right after purchase and there is no way to test whether someone just does this or is genuinely dissatisfied.

If you are in a lower-middle income country the course prices are automatically discounted. Please see the blue banner at the top. See here on how to use it.

I understand that, for a student, an investment of a few hundred dollars is substantial. However, think about it this way: what if these $200 allow you to finish your studies just a week or two earlier? Would you be able to make more than $200 in that week, working as an academic or in industry? Likely, you would make five or ten times as much in just the first couple of weeks or working as a professional. I'm pretty confident that the knowledge in these courses can save you not weeks but months. So see it as an investment to finish your studies early.
